New Design

Sunday, August 27th, 2006 at 23:45 Sunday, August 27th, 2006 at 23:45

We got a lot of comments and emails about the old design; my favorite is one that calls us lazy and stupid in the same sentence. This new dark-on-light color scheme will hopefully prove to be more legible. If anyone has any complaints, or if the contrast between the text and background still isn't great enough, feel free to leave a comment below. Bonus points for screenshots, or full descriptions of the browser and OS you're using.

Thanks to all of you that have left constructive feedback concerning the last design.

I like the new design, it is clean and navigation is well structured.

Just tried out the 'jump to content' link (using Firefox 1.5) and spotted a problem that . The page does jump to 'main' but further tabbing causes the page to jump back up to the top nav.

I think you have the same problem with IE 6.

One other thing that would help keyboard users a lot would be if you added a:focus to your a:hover styles. Otherwise it is very hard to tell where you have tabbed to on the page.

Hope this helps.

Yes, this is better color scheme. Easy to read, easy on the eyes. Thank you.

Though your choice of Wordpress Theme, Hemmingway, is (as it was before) repugnant. Hopefully your blog will grow larger and you will see the value of dumping this theme in favor of a 2 or 3 column layout with a better flow for your readers.

Cheers. =^.^=

^ Hmmm, what's with 'catgirls'?

This theme is nice...but perhaps it's actually home spun as this isn't using Wordpress I believe. While I wasn't crazy about the black background I found it easier for some reason to determine where I was.

I'd like to see the contrast bumped up slightly more...I'm squinting a bit trying to read the text. I think it would be really nice if you pushed just a little more color into your links and perhaps around the edges.

this sucks, bring back the blue

vaaaska, is right. As it says in the about page, this is a homegrown CMS (and design). I'm not quite sure what is 'repugnant' about this two column layout, but I very seriously doubt I would switch to a three column layout. I honestly have no idea what would even go in the third column.

What about some sort of syle switcher for those of us who prefer the old look? New look is good, but I personally liked the old one!

I'm with Alan and Biff! Much prefered the old look. Twas cool.

I dont like it. it's just pale.

Further to my comment re. the jump link not working properly: I've just tested the page with javascript disabled and all works fine. So the glitch seems to be something to do with the script that makes the page smooth-scroll down. As Javascript is not my specialty, it's over to you...

Ross:Tuesday, August 29th, 2006 at 11:13 #11

A style switcher is not a bad idea at all. If I get some time this weeked, I'll try to throw one together and make both the old and the new design available.

I like the new design. The white space makes the content pop more and it's a much cleaner UI.

Thanks for all your HARD WORK on both site designs. Keep posting. :0)

Both designs look great. Good job guys!

How ironic, I had your site - tagged under "webdesignilike" and just returned to see how you'd managed to make a dark background design I actually liked. But as with all things it's changed.

The previous design was definately more strikeing.

I agree with angusf.
